The recent Department of Transportation announcement regarding new commercial driver’s license requirements has sparked questions across the industry about how enforcement could affect capacity in both the near and long term.
The new CDL changes limit eligibility to certain lawful employment-based categories and eliminate online or mail-in renewals in favor of in-person renewals. While Canadian and Mexican drivers are not currently impacted, early estimates suggest that up to 5% of total CDL holders could be. Depending on how enforcement unfolds, carrier capacity could tighten regionally or across the country. However, both the timeline and severity of the impact remain to be determined.
