Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA):

Most email providers (like Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, etc.) offer 2FA or MFA (multi-factor authentication). This functionality is crucial to ensuring you services are secure. This functionality adds an additional layer of security and protection by requiring a second verification source, in addition to your password.

• Look for security settings within your email account and enable 2FA/MFA.
• Use authenticator apps, passkeys, or SMS verification where available. Passkeys if available are the most secure.
• MFA/2FA via email is not advised.

Strengthen Your Password:

• Use a strong, unique password that’s difficult to guess.
• Combine uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.  
• Avoid using personal information or common words.
• Consider using a password manager to generate and store strong passwords.  

 Review Account Recovery Options:

• Ensure your recovery email address and phone number are accurate and up-to-date regaining access if you forget your password or encounter account issues.

Be Cautious of Phishing:

• Be wary of suspicious emails or messages that ask for your personal information or passwords.
• Don’t click on links or download attachments from unknown senders.
• Verify the sender’s email address and be cautious of emails that create a sense of urgency.
• Never enter your email password on a website that you do not 100% trust.

Keep Software Updated:

• Maintain up-to-date operating systems, browsers, and antivirus software.
• Security updates often patch vulnerabilities that could be exploited by attackers.  

Limit Third-Party App Access:

• Review the apps and websites that have access to your email account.
• Revoke access for any apps you no longer use or trust.
• Many email providers have a section in their security settings to review and manage these permissions.
